CEO - A Place of Hope

The Cameroon Professional Society, CPS, is proud to recognize Mrs. Abong Fankam, an exemplary Cameroonian professional.

Abong Fankam was born and raised in Cameroon, West Africa. She is a social worker by profession and has worked at the Salvation Army women and children shelter as an intern and then a social worker. She worked for Mecklenburg county Department of Social Services for 10 years as a Child Protective Service Social Worker. She has also worked as Program Coordinator for NC Mentor.

She is the CEO and Co-founder of A Place of Hope, a non-profit organization that carters for the educational needs of AIDS orphans in Cameroon. Created in 2005, the organization has sponsored more than 750 AIDS orphans in 6 villages in Cameroon by paying for their school fees, providing uniforms, shoes and school supplies. In addition, the organization has provided thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies to children in need, paid for teacher’s salary and has built a school.

Abong is a member of Toastmaster International and past Vice President of Public Relations at Lake Norman Toastmaster. She received the 2005/2006 Lake Norman Toastmaster Rising Star Award. She is also a recipient of the 2007 Dorothy Height Excellence in Social Work award. In 2010 she was recognized as a “Link Leading Woman in Charlotte” by 107.9 The Link. She was recently featured in the 3rd and 4th editions of “Who Is Who in Black Charlotte” magazine. She is the 2012 recipient of the Lowes/Pride Global outreach Award for the work she does in Cameroon and the Charlotte community. She has been featured in numerous magazines in Charlotte, the Charlotte observer Newspaper and on several TV stations in Charlotte. Early this year, she was interviewed on Radio Disney to talk about her work in Cameroon.

Abong’s story revolves around children and families. A voice for the voiceless, she stands firmly to declare a message of hope, love and truth. Abong is a dedicated Christian and an inspiration to many who seek God’s love. She has a special place in her heart for children. She sees a unique power in every child. She believes that each child is a light of the world, shining to God’s glory.
